Some Personal Info

I’m currently getting my master’s degree in Museum Studies and I love my kitties and my old poodle that I still call a puppy.

Avid reader: I know a lot of people say they love reading and I don’t claim to be any different. It’s “cool” now to read and I remember when it used to be “cool” to not read. I have always been proud about how much I read and it’s shaped a lot of my life. My parents are both librarians and I started working in libraries at 16. Spotting a new book on the shelf became a problem and my library card routinely had over twenty books checked out. Piles of books lay near my bed.
I made it a point this year (2019) to read books I own but never got around to reading. This exercise helped me weed out some books I had no interest in reading anymore. I find it difficult to stop reading a book even if I’m not enjoying it but I’m starting to realize the value in knowing what I want to read. If I don’t like it, why force it?

Runner: I ran a marathon in 2018 and have run a few half marathons. Recently I’ve been running short distances for fun. I’m not very fast but I just love being on my feet and chasing those miles. When I trained for the marathon, I listened to Harry Potter on audiobooks for comfort and distraction.

Music: Don’t you love when certain music takes you back to specific moments in your life? I have a few artists that remind me so deeply of books I’ve read. For example, Vampire Weekend always reminds me of Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. It’s a treat to relive those times, just for an instant. I can picture myself lying on my bed, cheap speakers blasting Oxford Comma and Walcott as I turn the pages.

Movies: I do not pretend to have excellent taste in movies. Music and books, sure I’ll give myself some good praise. But movies, I love a romantic comedy that is the same story just told slightly different or a classic coming-of-age. I have no problem admitting my movie taste is rather “mainstream”. I work at an arthouse movie theatre and am starting to broaden my tastes. My favorite films this year have been foreign films (Capernaum, Never Look Away) but I’m still stoked for Brittany Runs a Marathon and I loved Booksmart. I’ll take movie recommendations too!
